Bikeman has been buzzing over the past few weeks about the new Pacenti TL28 rims. Finally a wide, tubeless compatible, light weight rim that won't break the bank. And eyelets, call us crazy but a few of us here still like to have eyelets in our rims.
Out of the box the TL28 rims look and feel the part of a high end XC / AM rim. The wide profile (28.0mm) will excite the AM and Trail riding crowd while the 450g weight of the 29'er is on par with rims that cost 10 times as much (compare to Enve Tubeless MTN Rim 29" AM at 440g and $899). The weight of a carbon rim at a fraction of the price. Admittedly the Pacenti TL28 won't be as stiff as its carbon counterparts but I bet you can think of something to can do with the $815 you will save. The rim features double wall construction with a welded seam and, as is the norm now, this is a disc brake only rim with no brake track to be found.
Next to the wide profile and weight of the rim, the other key selling point for the Bikeman crew was the tubeless compatibility. Pacenti call this rim "Tubeless Friendly." While not a true "Tubeless" rim the Pacenti TL28 sets up nicely with standard tubeless tape and valve. We found the bead holds nicely and are looking forward to pushing it through some corners as soon as the snow and slush of our Maine winter melt away. Bikeman will follow up with a complete ride report as soon as we can.
Bikeman really appreciates what Kirk Pacenti has done to advance the development of and truly pioneer the movement towards 650b mountain bike wheels. We still have one of Kirk's original Bear Paw 650b tires mounted up here in the shop, (the Bear Paw was a prototype test tire the preceded the Neo-Moto introduction) so it is nice to see the TL28 is available in 29", 26" as well as 650b sizes.
We have sent rims to Industry Nine to be built with their hubs and spokes and have built a few standard hub and spoke wheels here using the new Pacenti TL28 rims. Look for a complete review / test report coming soon. Below is the spec sheet and rim profile image.
