Howdo. My name is Zach Magoon and I have been commuting year-round by bike for the last 7 years in both Boston, MA and Portland, ME. Because each day brings new challenges, whether it be changing weather conditions, crappy drivers, sore muscles or mechanicals, I think my ramblings will be, at the very least, moderately amusing.

Man I wish I could compete with the epic reports (follies?) coming from some of the other team members down in NC, but I can't. Wish I could be there, next year is looking good. What I can do is talk about the amazing weather we've been having this week (ok, minus the wind). I commuted in for the first time this year in shorts and a short sleeve jersey. That is always a big to do for me. I think it's the earliest that I have done that. I get a kick out of some of the other roadies out there who are all decked out in tights and windbreakers--I'm only guessing that they spent the winter on trainers, cause for those who have been dressing up for the cold weather all winter, the coming of these 60 degree days means shedding all that fancy clothing. It certainly save time in the changing/dressing department and just feels awesome.

I would like to say how much I enjoy riding to work in the morning. The air, lighting, wildlife and the workout. Love it--especially when the weather is so nice. Some of my past entries have been a little negative about the trials and tribulations of riding every day, but I really wouldn't have it any other way. In fact, I would like to emphatically encourage everyone out there to start. Next month is National Bike Month and Bike to Work Week is May 15-19. Here are some events by state: http://www.bikeleague.org/programs/bikemonth/events.php

Now that gives everyone almost a month to get their bikes tuned up and ready to go (and all of your excuses out of the way as well). If you live too far to bike, consider parking your car 5-10 miles or so away and riding the rest in by bike. Any other excuses? This time of year is great because you don't get too nasty sweaty--so if your office doesn't have a shower, you can just "touch up" in the bathroom sink.

I heard this morning that gas prices are gonna creep up to the $3/gallon range--holy crap and a half! That's gotta be enough incentive to get on a bike instead. Spend that money on a nice lunch--hell that's what I do! You can even justify eating a little more cause you're just gonna burn it off riding home. Man life is good.

See you out there.

It's tough to bike to work when your not feeling well. This past week I have had a real crappy cold, complete with sore throat, cough, sweats, clogged nose, the works. Monday I just didn't even go to work and the rest of the week I have been driving in. I just can't stand it. I feel like I'm cheating on my bike or something. I walk past it in the garage and I swear I hear it sigh or lose air out of the tires as it shakes its handlebars in disgust. And I am ashamed, but there is just no way I could've ridden in to work this week. I think this is the first full work week of not riding in over two years. But I guess when your body is telling you to slow down, you better listen. I have had one hell of month, let me tell you. I became a dad (very cool) and a week later started a new job--yikes. So this week my body said no--no to normal living and that included riding in.
