Running on Ice |

In an effort to not drive my car today, I ran to work. Whaaaaa?? Yeah, it was an executive decision based on a couple of things. The first was that I am having a wheel repaired on my SS commuter rig, the only bike I have with studded tires. I'm not convinced that studs would've done much today though as the the roads had a very thin layer of ice and the studs wouldn't have much to bite into. Maybe though.
The second factor was the forecast of high winds later today--up to 30mph which just makes for a miserable time on my 44x16 single speed. So I ran the shortest and safest route to work from my house, about 5 miles, and now I'm a little sore and REALLY looking forward to running home in the dark of night with a headwind. Good times.
I'm a little glad (miniscule amounts of glee, mind you) that I did run in because it was pretty icy out there this morning. I would've been sliding and possible crashing all morning and would've been in an ever more sorry state of mind. My original thought this morning as I set out with my small bike pack strapped securely to my back was that I would try running in maybe a couple times a week when the weather was either too cold or too nasty to bike. Now I'm rethinking that because running sucks so much.
People actually do this sport for fun. It's hard to believe that such a jarring, physically abusive activity could be considered fun, but there are people who do it in the same capacity as I do with biking. How do they not know that biking is so much more enjoyable? It's faster, more efficient, less taxing on the joints and you get to buy all kinds of cool gear. I mean, what does running have? Sneakers? Please. Yeah in a pinch, running is a great alternative to sitting around at your in-law's talking about ailments or reading the paper, but there is simply no comparison to biking.
When kids are little they jump on their bikes, build jumps, terrorize the neighborhood and put baseball cards in their spokes for fun. I don't know any kids who decide to go out for a 45 min jog--why would they--it's lame? I want to keep that sense of youthful fun alive and biking does the trick. Fortunately, for me, my wheel is fixed. I'll be riding tomorrow. Happy New Year!
