Well I jumped at the chance to do another training race this past weekend. The big incentive to doing this road race was that I could ride my bike to the start from my house. I entered in the A-race which comprised of categories 1,2,3. We were to roll off at 11:00 a.m. and would be going 54 miles. I knew the course well since it was practically in my backyard and my bread and butter loop that I did for recovery rides.

It is a 6 mile loop that we would complete 9 times. The course is pretty much all flat except for couple small rises that can easily be ridden in the big ring. The race turned out to be pretty painful right from the start. On the opening lap the attacks began and did not let up until about five guys got away. The main field kind of stumbled with no immediate response and let the break build a good lead. My worse pain of the day came when I decided to go to the front and start taking some pulls.

Man was this a bad idea because just as I moved back to rest for a bit team CCB moved to the front and really put the hammer down. They drilled it for the next 10 miles punishing the field pretty bad without bringing back much time on the leaders. I found myself at the back of the field trying to recover from my previous work only to be rewarded by covering gaps that people were letting open since they were cracking from the pace. Anyway after a pretty impressive pace of 54 miles in 2 hours and 14 minutes the field sprint turned out to be for glory since the guys from the original break took all the prizes. I ended up 12th in the sprint which I was sort of content with since I wasted so much energy doing all that chasing for nothing. Overall I finished with a 25th placing since there were five original guys off the front and another seven guys who went for it in the last 5 miles to better their positions rather than waiting to sprint it out with the main field.. All in all it was a really good work out and the CBRC club will be putting on the same race next weekend only this time there is a detour that will take us up a hill 9 times and add a little extra distance. Congratulations to whoever you were from Target Training that won the race and I hope all is well for the guy that was laid out on the bridge from the B-race who was rumored to have broken his collar bone. Thanks CBRC for putting on the good race.

Sean
