The season opener, Bonelli Park is a 1,980 acre multi-use recreation area located in San Dimas. Yes, San Dimas is best known to any family man as the summer home to "Raging Waters." The infamous aquatic theme park featuring waterslides, speed slides, chutes, lagoons and children's activity pools. Yep, you can just imagine! Anyways, back at the park us mountain bike enthusiasts are sharing space with boaters, fishermen, hikers, recreational RV campers and an occasional "Dog on a Leash."

The course changes ever so slightly year to year. Working with Corkscrew, Lake View, Lower Bee Hive, North Shore, Tree Line, Middlecrest and a few other trails we climb some 1,500 feet per the 8 or so miles.

Because the Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park is situated at the confluence of a half a dozen SoCal freeways, everybody and his brother shows up to race. The team jerseys are a dizzying array of colors. The youth and the ever-so-lighter hardtail equipment forced me to enter my single speed. The race was on, the pro's caught and passed me within a mile of the finish.

My second lap lacked the beginner class so there was little to be entertained or amused. In all it was a beautiful day in the park. I will note that a few (to remain un-named out-of-towners) failed to comply to local tradition and pause at the boat launch area, watch a student pilot attempt a landing, reflect upon the scenic overlook at the 10, 71 & 57, and most importantly failed the mandatory "Hot Tub" dip per lap that we local's cherish.
