19th Annual Keyesville Classic - The Darkside

Just a short note on the Keyesville Classic race two weeks ago. For an early season race the course and weather were more than anybody could have asked for. The short course was set up so all the racers could be seen all at once. There was a little bumping and grinding going on but all in good fun. Almost looked like the ‘ol roller derby from years ago. Saturday was set up for the short course race and the downhill.

It was really something to see the vintage bikes running the same course with all the full blown downhillers. Protection for the vintage downhillers was jeans and a long sleeve shirt. No pads. Sunday's event was the long course. Sport rode two laps, about eighteen miles.

Now the dardside. Close to the end of my second lap, just about the time you think I'm almost home and start to pour it on or give it whatever you got left as the case might be, I run into a big ‘ol rattlesnake out for a little sun. Put some real starch in my shorts, yes it did. Got around him without damage to either one of us.

That encounter must have put me in autopilot as I must have started watching the trail too close rather than picking my line. Low and behold it was face plant time. Ouch, stuffed a shoulder, cracked some ribs and bruised a hip. Just don't want to do that again.

A week later, unable to scratch my nose or wave howdy I'm at the Bonelli Park race handing out water bottles to Matt Hersey and Andy Freye. At least I had a good left arm. Hey, it was great to meet a couple more team members and compare notes. Got to be back on the bike soon as our 24hr race is coming up. Would have sent more pictures of Keyesville but I'm still on the darkside wanting to forget.
