Commuter Files

What a morning ride today. The sun was out, there was no wind, it was glorious. I felt like I was in a movie--I'm greeting neighbors with a happy "mornin," whistling at birds as they flutter on the bushes beside the bike trail and it was warm! Relatively speaking--40 is warm for a morning ride this time of year.

I took my time today. Normally I'm thinking about training or not being late for work, but today it felt like the bike was taking me for a ride. I was on the single speed (I took the studded tires off two weeks ago so it's nice and smooth with the slicks) which just makes me smile. It's such a goofy bike but I know there's not another one like it out there and for some reason it makes it special to ride. Without the wind, the 44x16 ratio just sails along on the flats--not too hard to pedal--just right. The air today finally smelled of Spring. Perhaps because it was over the freezing mark so things were thawing out. Regardless, it was the best ride to work in a long time. I wish I could feel this way all day. Usually work puts a stop to it. But that 45 minutes, or hour, or two on my ride in the morning is one of the best parts of my day. Yes there are plenty of shitty weather days, but days like today make them easy to forget.

So it's officially time for all you seasonal riders to dust off your bikes and get out there--ok maybe wait one more day if you live up in Maine cause we're supposed to get another storm tomorrow, but that should be it for the year right?
