I recently got a new iPod for my birthday and compared to my old one, this Nano is so nice and small and light. So, I thought I might try listening to music during my rides in the morning. I've been against this for quite some time because I like to hear traffic noise, birds chirping and people yelling at me if necessary. But most of those concerns were squelched over the past few days. However, I've run into some other issues (of course).
The first one is the damn headphones. I'm using the standard-issue Apple ones and they just don't fit in my ears all that well. And when I get up to higher speeds, they get blown out. Also the wind noise is pretty substantial, so I have to turn up the volume a bit which is something I don't want to do because I like my acute hearing and don't want to blast it with unnecessary decibels--plus, like I said before, I still want to hear the traffic and nature while I'm riding. The headphones also sometimes pull out when I turn my head to check for cars behind me--sucko. Maybe some of those form fitting headphones would be better, I dunno. I also don't want to get too weird about all of this either. I have ridden years without music and have enjoyed listening to myself breathing--it just seems like I'm more in tune with the workout as opposed to basing my tempo on which Red Hot Chili Peppers song comes up randomly in my playlist.
One other thing is, where to put the iPod. I have a handy little pocket on my bike bag that works, but I really can't see the controls and don't want to take it out to fiddle with volume or song selections. I wonder if all of this is worth it? Seems so high-maintenance.
Tomorrow I may try an audio book--I mean I might as well learn something, right? Perhaps I could learn a foreign language--yeah, that's it. How cool would it be to pick up some Spanish or Italian (I've given up on French--I sucked at that in college)? With 10-12 hours a week in the saddle, I think I could at least learn how to curse at cars in another language. That would be worth it all now wouldn't it?
Keepin the volume low,
