Soldier Hollow was the site of the Nordic events of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. On May 19th, it was the site of the “Hammerfest at the Hollow” Intermountain Cup XC race. The course has 1,100 feet of elevation gain over a 9.4 mile course with the experts doing 3 laps and the sport categories doing 2. My group didn’t waste any time with a redline pace right from the start.

The course snakes its way around a hillside with lots of ups and downs. I’ve never sat down to watch this race, but I understand you can see 80% of it from the stands. I felt I started out pretty well, but by the 3rd lap the heat and the dust were taking their toll and I was re-thinking my hydration strategy for the day. I was 13th out of 15 finishers. Aaron Smith finished 5th out of 10 in the Sport Men 30-34 and Ryan Woodward finished 11th of 12 finishers in the Sport Men 34-39. For full results, go to http://www.intermountaincup.com/race/

My bike however worked flawlessly. In fact I have noticed that after each of my races this year I have been surprised by how well my bike has functioned, so a big thank you to all the expert advice on parts from the team at Bikeman.com. Those Enduro bearings in my x-type bottom bracket are the best.
