Commuter Files

The Commuter (Undercover) File

Yup, I forgot my underoos today. And a pair of socks. I do this about once a month and have to go commando, unbeknownst to my co-workers. I have the bottom drawer of my file cabinet filled with clothes, so you would think there would be a pair of boxers in there--no. I could've sworn I grabbed some off the dryer this morning as I was packing my bag with some fresh clothes, but no. Two t-shirts though--can't be too safe there, what a dope!

Keep an inventory at work. If there's a place you can stash some spare clothes at work, do it. And make sure you have it well stocked with undies, socks, a belt, an extra pair of pants. This way you don't have to carry a bag full of clothes everyday to work. I have two bags that I use to carry stuff to work. One big Critical Mass from Patagonia that I've had for 8 years now. I use this thing in the winter and when I have to bring larger items to work or I plan to pick up groceries for dinner. The smaller one is again a Patagonia bag--this one I think is called the Orbit. It's a pretty small sling-style bag, but I can keep my tools, pump, tubes and a change of clothes in it. That is, when I remember them.

So to avoid that moment of panic when you rifle through your bag looking for that forgotten undergarment, keep a stash at work. Perhaps I can listen to my own advice and bring 3-4 pairs in. Hopefully none of my co-workers read these postings. They'd be pretty frightened to hear the only thing that separated me from them was a thin layer of well worn denim--eesh.
