Once in a while we get the chance to take a beautiful old stead and make it into a functional, fun bike that is guaranteed to get some miles. Bikeman's newest custom build is the 127th Fat Chance bicycle built in 1983. A once top of the line mountain bike has been turned into a dual-speed townie.
Owner and Bikeman employee, Matt Viara, chose to run a Paul Components Melvin chain tensioner with a two chainring, 26-38, front setup. This gives him enough gears to push the flats and still be able to climb a hill without blowing out his knees. The gears are changed by a Suntour XC Expert front thumb shifter. The shifter is conveniently mounted on the right hand, underside, of the handlebar.
The rest of the bike is a straight forward mix of old and older. The original equipment includes the beautiful box crown Fat Chance fork, the Deore (Deer Head) front derailleur and the Sunshine bolt on freewheel hubs. A spattering of old, first generation, XT components, some fenders and your John Tomac Attack mushroom grips round out this fine machine.
