24 Hours of Adrenalin @ Hurkey Creek Park #2 8 Hour Solo SS Idyllwild, CA Saturday, September 22, 2007

I personally have not seen rain in nearly two (2) years. So I fell asleep watching the Weather Channel Friday evening. I was over packed and trying to remember mud survival skills when we arrived at camp Saturday a.m. As it tured out our event was cloudy and a bit cool, but that was it.
Over the past 4 years I have been part of a 5 person co-ed team and numerous corporate teams Then last April Tex elected to ride the Solo Event. My imagination and peer pressure soon got the best of me, and I too registered for the eight hour solo rider event. It has opened my eyes to another level of riding. Regrettable, the team has splintered into a thousand bits and I may have to repeat this event in one years time.

I was amazed that a short stack and a bucket of coffee and then 4 or 5 bottles of HEED could propel me thru the 9.2 mile 1300 ft. climb five times. And that was on a single speed. Sure I'll approach the race differently next time, and I could possibly even do more laps, but I'll save that discussion for another time.
Russ and his wife were there to encourage us, Shannon, his wife and 4 month old and Mark rounded out the single speed fanatics. While I was not privy to the odds or the bookings of the race betting, I was surprised by the results. Shannon, the fastest and possibly the most experience rider of the group went out fast. Upon completing my first lap I came to understand that a cracked helmet, broken rear wheel and near concussion retired him. Mark on the other hand went out strong for 3 laps. He pitted and finished off before sundown. I followed the Tex plan, finish a lap and come back to camp to see what was happening Well, I felt like I had a few more laps in me, of course on the single speed, each lap required a little more walking than the previous lap. But who knows what next year's strategy might allow.
