 Rider Down
So, I am an athlete. As being such, I don’t like to admit when I am injured. Unfortunately, whether I want to admit it or not I am currently on the “injured list.” I noticed that my knee was bothering when I was biking. I could pretty easily work through it on my bike whether stationary or mountain. It felt like a pressure in my knee pushing from the inside and on the top of my knee cap. Even though I could work through it while riding it was still there.
I paid the price of my ignorance later that day and the days following. It would go away pretty fast at first. But over the past couple weeks it was staying around a lot longer and much more intense. I continued to bike as I normally would have. Yeah, don’t do that. I finally decided it was bad and wasn’t getting better. Duh! I went to Portland Orthopedics and saw a sports medicine person. I have something called patella/femoral syndrome. In other words my patella was tracking incorrectly for whatever reason and was rubbing on my femur. Causing a very pissed off and painful knee. I can barely bend it without some sort of pain. I sheepishly asked if I could still bike with the brace. He gave me “the look.” The look that says you know the answer to that.
I won’t be biking for at least a few weeks and will have to be making some changes. On the plus side I finally said this is bad I need to get it looked at, and it isn’t horrible. But, if I were to continue biking with it unchecked I could really more permanently have damaged it. Moral of my story: If you are feeling some kind of pain consistently, get it looked at. If you can catch it early you might need to take some time off, but it would be less time off than if you ignore it. While some of you may be thinking duh! It’s hard to face when it means stopping something you enjoy. However, when you can’t do the sport, you realize how much you love it and you’ll appreciate it more when you’re able to do it again.
