Commuter Files

My lights suck. There, I said it. I have the Sigma Exo X system . When I first got them, I liked them because they were so bright. But about a week into using them (last year) the battery could only hold a charge for 20 min. so I was sent a new battery and charger in hopes that it was just a bad combination. That seemed to work pretty well at first, but I noticed this year that my low-battery red warning lights would come on about 15 minutes into the ride home.

Come on! So I would have to go down to one of the lights which trickles out light like a mini mag light. And to top things off, I managed to rip the wire out of the connector wire, resulting in a MacGyver-style tape and swearing session in my office. The only saving grace to this lighting system is that it shipped with two cords. A Y version so one can run both lights at once and a single version.

Now, I'm down to one light. It's not as bright as I would like it, but it's gonna have to do for now. With new winter shoes and a new bike purchase coming up, I just don't have the cabbage to get another lighting system. I think it's marginally fine for commuting, but I certainly can't use it for trail riding, which bums me out a bit. Wouldn't I love to invest in these beauties. But I think $899 is a bit steep, considering it's almost twice as much as the bike I would put it on. I bet cars would flash their high beams at anyone with those puppies.

So my search for some better lights continues. Maybe after the holidays, I'll try to scrounge up some cashola to try out another set. Assuredly, I'll write about them. If anyone out there has a suggestion, drop me a line zmagoonatgmail.com
