Bakersfield, a mere two hours north of L.A. But really, a totally different part of the state. And that's why Saturday was the District Final for those "North." I showed up on Sunday. It was race #8 for the SoCal group. I was unsure of what to expect. Los Angeles actually received rain on Friday. Bakersfield is well known for it's "Tule Fog" during the winter months. Thankfully, no fog. Cool and crisp is how I would describe my race prep time.

Hart Park straddles the Kern River as it emerges from the southern boundaries of the Sierra Nevada Range. The park attracts all kinds of folks. The cross type were on a side of a Two hundred foot embankment criss-crossing thru those grasses, dirt and paved sections of course. This ride actually had a 100 foot run-up and a thirty foot embankment climb-up. It was nicely spaced and the groove well established from the Saturday crowd.

I chatted with some folks about the "Central California Cyclo-Cross" series and the Norcal and Nevada Cyclocross organization. It seems there is more "cross" than I ever expected. So I had plenty to think about during my race.

Again out of deference to my age I started dead last. The Junior's were only two minutes behind me. So I huffed and puffed my was past 7 riders. The junior that passed my however, caused my only bobble. I was following him into the barriers and got lost in his seemly magical dismount and gazelle like prance over the risers and back onto his ride, and there I was grabbing a bunch of brake to unclip in a panic. So much for concentration and form. I'm undecided about my next cross-build. Steel or carbon.
