Boy what a difference a week makes. November 24th (race #8) was cold as… er… a… I was going to say cold as hell but that doesn’t make a lot of sense, does it? Anyhow, it was cold - dang cold - but dry as could be, dusty in fact. The course was wicked fast too, but I, on the other hand, was not.
Perhaps it was because, as you can clearly see in the attached photo, I was obviously suffering from an advanced case of disorientation. I did, however, later manage to clear it up a bit and eventually fall in line with the others. I pressed on to a second place finish but was unable to even remotely challenge for first as Eric Gardiner flat-out rode away from the group.

The good new is, assuming this nasty weather pattern continues, Santa should have no problems whatsoever landing his sled in Salt Lake City this year. The bad news is there was 6 – 8 inches of wet heavy snow overnight just ahead of race #9. In spite of it all, “What a great race!” This is what cyclocross is all about, or so they tell me. The trick was keeping it upright, and for the most part that’s exactly what I tried to do. I laid it down but once and one other occasion I managed to go off course badly enough that I needed to dismount to get going again. Most other racer I spoke to reported double-digit mess-ups so I was ahead of the curve. I think that, along with the fact that my heavily lugged, toe spiked Lake shoes rule in the muck, are the primary reasons I was able to overtake Eric on the final lap to record my second first place finish in 6 races. Not bad.
