Tales from the Dungeon

The sweat
The sweat
As I sit here in Michigan, writing this, the forecast this week is again for frigid temps – GREAT! Last weekend I got some good road rides in, the weather was a balmy 30 degrees! Now it’s back down into the dungeon, that little corner of the damp and dreary basement that contains my bike, a trainer, a TV, some videos/DVD’s and pools of sweat.

The data
The data
EVERY year I say I’m going to tape all of the Spring Classics and create a library for just these occasions, but did I? NO! So, I’ve pretty much given in to the boredom of the same movies, same races as last year. Two hours is the most I can stand on the trainer, just about the same length as a VERSUS Cyclism Sunday’s presentation, but remember, I didn’t set the timer. With the boredom and repetitively of the trainer and the same video’s I might as well be strung up on the rack – may add some variety; might be more interesting!

I do have my collection of training DVD’s great for shorter quality sessions, I’ve found training video’s like CTS and Spinerval’s to be useful to add some variety, but that darn Chris Carmichael says the same thing every time I ride with him! How did Lance tolerate him!? But, what other options are there.

I do need to point out, I’m no wuss!! I’ll ride down to 25 degree’s if it’s sunny and calm, 30 degrees when it’s dark – with lights. Some of the best winter riding, especially on the windy days are on local trails, freezing nights and temps that rarely get above freezing adds a new dynamic to trail riding. Any colder, and it feel like matches are being stuffed under my fingernails, then when I get home the matches are lit and the blood starts to flow again – Oh the pain! The rest of the time it’s the basement, and the dungeon master bowing down as a slave to the PowerTap.

Happy trails – hope they take you further than mine!

Michael
