New England Trail Report Foxboro State Forest Foxboro,MA April 13, 2008
I was down visiting the in-laws on Sunday and got a great 2.5 hour ride in at Foxboro, MA State forest. The weather was calling for rain showers all day, but the skies cleared, temps were in the 70's and I was ready for my first MTB ride of the season. It was awesome. The trails were in great shape with a few water/mud holes, but the overall trails were downright dry. I was amazed. Foxboro has pretty rocky and sandy soil so it dries out early in the year and is a great place to get in some Spring riding when other places (like most of Maine) are still under snow or water.
Foxboro has some very challenging technical single track terrain that crisscrosses though some larger loose gravel double track. It's easy to get lost as many of the single track trails intersect or terminate on the larger walking trails. There are some Hiker only trails that I always stay off so as not to piss off bipeds or screw up the trails. Plus there are probably 20-30 miles of shared use trails in there, so the hiking trails are not missed.
I was a bit concerned to see some ATV's cruising around in there, but I guess they're the ones who built the trails so many years ago. I thought, though, that they were only allowed in certain spots, not the fragile single track. Here I was all concerned about tearing it up--eesh.
So all of you in MA, NH, and ME who are looking for a place to ride, Foxboro is good to go.
