Commute Another Way

Today was the perfect opportunity to “Commute another way”. Warm temperatures have finally arrived in Maine; as Earth Day was this past week, and “commute another way week” is approaching May 12-16, I thought what a perfect opportunity to ride my orange crush Trek Drift single speed to work this afternoon.

Being a freelance American Sign Language interpreter in Maine does not lend well to a bike commute. I can be in four very different locations all over southern Maine in one day, so the bike isn’t a great commuting choice. But this evening was a treat; I was working downtown (about 12 minutes by car including parking, or 12 minutes by bike including chaining her up) so I took advantage – hopped on my cruiser and headed up and over the Casco Bay Bridge on my bomber beast. The massive tires are no challenge for the chewed up city streets of Portland, and the colossal standard issue bell forewarns pedestrians and fellow riders well in advance. The single speed and bulky frame make for a great way to burn a few calories in a comfortable fashion. And the epic turning radius does make it a little tricky to maneuver the tight turns on the south side on/off ramp of the bridge, but the handlebars make for a great lazy cruise otherwise! Don’t get me wrong, today was not the first time on the cruiser, in fact, this bike has been my best friend more times than not as I have head into the “Old Port” for a night of spirits and dancing! Definitely two thumbs up on the Trek Drift – work or no work this is a gem of a bike!

Happy riding!
