Rotator Cuff Recovery Part C By Old Guy #2 Bill Turner 3rd Place Podium at Root 66 Winding Trails
 | | click to enlarge | Timeline: The anniversary of my ice slip 2-28-07, has come and gone, and the shoulder fixed arthroscopicaly by Orthopedic Associates, mostly works, and I am now doing arm exercises with 6 lb weights instead of 2 lb. If you told me it would take over a year to get some amount of upward strength back I would have never believed you, but it sure has.
Training: Snow, snow, snow, snow. We had about 3 feet of snow on the ground until 2 weeks ago and then it left in 60 deg. Weather. About 3 months ago I got my body to switch to going to bed at 8:30 and getting up at 4:45 AM to ride the trainer for 45 minutes. I reached about 300 base miles in the 1st month and starting to do some periodic heavier sessions in addition to snowshoeing on weekends and shoveling snow off my roof. If any of you have evolved a training sequence for a late 50’s person who is still employed full time and want to share it I’d be interested in reading or listening.
Some Inspiration: I renewed my USA cycling 50+ license and plan on racing three national races with Kirk Turner; Dear Valley, New York, and Nationals at Mt. Snow. We have campsite reserved at Molly Stark in Vermont, it even has showers if you all are looking for a camping location.
More Inspiration: We escaped from Maine and spent two weeks in Salt Lake, cross country skiing, bushwacking on snowshoes, road riding, and then camped in Moab for 5 days. What a great location, you can ski and ride in the same day.
Riding In Maine?: Well given how bad the roads are, I started with semi slicks on the hardtail on blacktop, and have now switched to the Rein II and knobbys as the trails are dry enough to ride, even with the 4 inches of rain last weekend.
Racing: Winding Trails, Root 66, Bronze in old fart class, 4-27-08: Dry as a bone, I rode the hardtail with semi-licks, got beat by a roady who decided the course was easy enough to ride. Speedfest, never saw my heartrate below 160, had a great time, roady passed me at about 1 mile, beat me by 7 minutes. Good return to racing. Looking forward to the rest of the season.
Trek Across Maine 2008: Well racing in 2008 is finally a reality. I hope to see you soon. If any of you are looking for a team to ride with doing the American Lung Association Trek Across Maine June 12,14,15 we have 11 people signed up for the Bikeman.com Friends team, and have room for more. If we get to 15 team members we are eligible for some prizes.
