It’s been a while since I have raced so I thought a quick ride report might be in order. One of my favorite road rides is up Milcreek Canyon just east of Salt Lake City. I start out at about 4450 feet (home) and depending on where the snow is I finish as high as 7650’ at the Big Water parking area.
At five miles up the canyon, there is a gate that stays locked until July 1st, so the riding above that is sweet and auto free until then. Being easily amused, I have made a game of noting where the snow is as each time I go up it has retreated just a little more. So I have decided to document the snow level periodically. I may be the only one who finds this interesting, but what the hey.
On May 18th, I rode the canyon expecting to hit snow within a few hundred feet of the gate, but I rounded one bend after another before finally reaching Elbow Fork (6200’) and snow. This is where the canyon takes a hard turn south plunging the canyon into shadow for the remainder which is another three miles or so. Last year I made it to Big Water on May 14th having to ride through only one patch of snow. As this winter was much harder than last, it may be a while before I reach the top. I found this nifty elevation profile online so thanks to Mike Hibler.
