2008 Solitude Ski Resort Mid-Week Series
The Solitude Mid-Week Series was back, bigger and better for its 2nd year. An additional week of racing and an expert category was added along with cash pay-outs 5 deep instead of 3 deep. This was very appealing to me since I finished in 4th place last year.
Solitude Ski Resort is in Big Cottonwood Canyon, about 15 miles from my home. The course is pretty technical, with some steep hairpin climbs and boulder filled downhill sections. Each lap is 4 miles, with the expert categories doing 3 laps.
The races started on June 24th and went for 7 weeks. The first week’s race included mud and running through snow, with the final race having summer monsoon rainstorms. I missed one due to vacation, finished 2nd place in another, finished 3rd place in one after blowing a tire off the rim, and won the rest.
I remember doing well in races and leaving with enough cash and or prizes to about cover my costs. I don’t remember making money before this series. At the final awards I finished 1st in the Expert B category and was handed an envelope with $475 in cash. I’ve never seen my wife so supportive of my racing.
