 Mammoth Mountain Bike Park
One should visit Mammoth at least one day a year. The timing is most important, with an annual snowfall of 32 feet and only 300 day of sun, finding that day can be elusive. That is the back story, Mammoth Lakes, CA is L.A.'s, local ski hill. Well, local in a sense ( 5 hours north) and now pretty darn exclusive, but I degress.
For less money than a California XC race number you can "free ride" over nearly 3,500 acres. The elevation tops out at 11,053 feet above the Pacific. The Panorama Gondola climbs at the rate of 800 feet per minute! So I've given up climbing today. I'm here just for the ride.
Russ and I decided to escape the big city and Kamikaze the day trip. I currently do not own a full suspension bike, however, this annual day trip could change my mind. The long flowy switchbacks off the back side are fast. This is of course above the tree line. Once we drop down from the nose bled zone, we fall into endless single track that always points down.
If the fingers are prone to cramp after applying the binders for some extreme distance maybe I should have packed a lunch. We luckly found an old favorite- 7 Bridges, it being a portion of the National XC course held in the 90's. After more than enough free ride, we hit the road home. Gravity can be an exciting adjunct to another day of riding in the "Golden State".
