Amesbury Cross Amesbury, MA September 14, 2008
It’s a good thing that I’ve got some extra padding around the waist. While participating in my first cross race of the season I grazed/hit a wooden post while taking a wild line down a wet and rooty downhill. It didn’t knock me down, but it smarted like hell. Yesterday it was a raspberry, today it is a purple bruise. No need to go to the ER, just a little reminder of my race, all week long.
The Amesbury cross race was pretty good. I saw two other bikeman guys there – Herb and a newer member Dave Barr. It was raining when I woke up, so the ground was a little slick, and a bike-wash was definitely required after the race, but I would say there was just enough wetness to make the corners interesting. I don’t think that any rain was actually falling during the 1/2/3 Master’s race. Mike and I were racing at the back of that. There were some heavy-hitters in our race. Johnny Bold, Curtis Boivin, Matt Kraus, etc…
Course design was improved from last year, with a safer start, less roots, a section of pavement, and a challenging stone stair run-up. I’m always glad to see that course designers can “mix it up”. I hate doing the same course, year after year.
Of course, racing wouldn’t be possible without some of our great team sponsors. The Lazer helmets are great. Slick Willy chain lube works great in all seasons. Salsa makes great cross framesets – I’m still rocking my Las Cruces. Cyrious Java gets me moving in the morning before the race. SRAM chains every time, without a doubt. Avid Shorty 6 brakes for cross. Salsa chainrings. Jagwire cables & housing.
Two cross races next weekend in NH!
Matt
