Falling into ‘Cross/Jeep 48 Straight
The Canyons Resort, PC, Utah
Saturday, September 20, 2008

ImageThe Cyclocross season has kicked off in Utah with Falling into ‘Cross at The Canyons Resort in Park City. This event was added somewhat late in the game to coincide with the Jeep 48 Straight MTB slalom event but despite the short notice, the race was well run and well attended. The course was short and technical with a steep run-up that came in two sections with a twenty foot flat stretch between.

ImageThe B’s were all run together in a group of forty to fifty racers and the laps were in the three minute range making for some happy chaos. Troy Nye and I were there to represent Bikeman Utah Chapter and to check our fitness. We stayed together for the first half of the race and then I started to fade. The run-up was too much for me as I have done exactly zero running to prepare for this season which, coincidentally, equals my total preparation in previous years. Troy had spent his spring training for a marathon and has run some since then, so the hill was easier for him and he began to pull away.

ImageI realized that I couldn’t continue with my HR pinned in the high 190’s so I sat up a bit and tried to refine some of my lackluster skills. Overall, I am happy with how I rode while not happy with how I ran so I know what I need to do. Officially, I finished 33rd which was great as places 1, 3, 13, 23 and 33 were paid finishers so I got some cash. Yuh-huh!!  Troy DNF’d after he hit a steel spike that destroyed his front tire.

Thanks to Scott USA Bicycles for all the great stuff they gave out after the race--every racer got something cool. Thanks to John Gallagher and the officials for holding the event. One more non series race this Friday night and then the regular series begins on October 4th. Tune in to CBS sports on October 12 to see the MTB event and maybe even some of the CX.

Thanks for reading.

Dave
