Southern California Cross Prestige Series Fullerton, CA September, 21 2008
The Eight Acre Muckenthaler Cultural Center in Fullerton, CA. was the inaugural event to a three month race to the ribbon. Because I am a near newbie and saw eighty-two riders toe the Cat 4 line I knew I was witness to a lot of interest and hype. The hype felt really good. Thanks to Big Al and the whole Bikeman.com crew I was wheeling my brand spankin' new Salsa Chili con Crosso to the Masters 55+ line.
For the combined 45 and 55 group and the Ladies( to start two minutes back), some 50 riders waited for the whistle. Well, the start was furious and everyone seemed to settle into their groove. The 85% grass course was non-technical and I pushed past a few riders. I counted my lucky stars for no bobbles and not being lapped by the race leader.
About the time that I was ready for a break from the action, I had just finished a lap and could hear the annoucement of the race leader. It took every bit of energy to finish one more lap with hardly a soul in sight. Fortunately I finished mid pack and for me I was delighted. The SRAM build was perfect. The Lazer helmet protected me from the riff-raff.
