| | Lawrence Kovacs: Mountain Bike
2008 RACING AGE: 44
RESIDENCE: Bath, ME
WHERE I GO MONDAY MORNING: Georgetown Central School, Grade Three.
RACING DISCIPLINE(S) AND CATEGORY(S): Sport MTB
# OF YEARS RACING: 3
# OF BIKES OWNED: 3 - Kona Explosif, Fisher Rig, LeMond Arrivee.
FAVORITE BIKE: Kona Explosif
FAVORITE TRAIL OR RIDE: Bradbury Mountain, Joe's Woods, Reid State Park.
NON-CYCLING INTERESTS/HOBBIES: Being a dad, surfing, backcountry skiing, playing the odd gig on my Hammond B3, running, yoga, loitering and telling tall tales at the bike shop.
PERSONAL NOTES & QUOTES: Well, I finally broke my old Bianchi Grizzly frame last year. The floppy feeling I felt on hard turns was caused by the lack of a weld between the seat tube and seat stay. The PHENOM Matt V. hooked me up with a pretty, green Kona Explosif frame that changed everything for the better. I guess bike frames have improved a bit since the mid 1990s. The slack head tube angle and the short chain stays made for a great-feeling ride which I loved all season long. I ran it with three chain rings this year, but I will probably join the ranks of the single ring up front before too long.
I had another fun season in 2007. The drinking of "Al's Magic Powders" (a.k.a. HEED) more or less erased the problems I was having with cramps. I definitely felt more comfortable riding in the crowd with each race I completed. I am excited to do it all over again next year. My motto remains "ride smart, not hard." I guess my other motto is "don't skimp on the air pressure in that back tire" (a flat AGAIN at Bradbury.).
Racing for Team Bikeman is a terrific part of my life. I enjoy the training, I enjoy the racing, and I am proud to represent one of the most special bike shops in the world. I hope to continue sporting the full team regalia and throwing down in the name of moutain biking for years to come.
