Willimas Lake Classic Rosendale, NY Date: June 14, 2009 Presented by Favata's Table Rock Tours and Bicycles
Well this weekend made it 3 for 3. Not 3 wins, not 3 podium finishes, but 3 mountain bike races that I preregistered for and was blessed by pouring rain the evening before the race. With out the summer heat arriving the already damp ground conditions couldn’t be anymore enjoyable than to create another mudfest with heavy evening rains.
The race course is one that I have not done in a couple of years but it has always been a favorite. The course was 5 miles in length with about 90% single track. There is just enough broken up sections of double track to get fluids and gels digested.
My race consisted of starting with the Cat 1 19-29 and 30-39 combined. We started after the Pro Men and with the Cat 1 40-49 and Pro Women just after us. The race went off as they all do sprint for the single track stop and then in this case mash the pedals to push threw some super thick goop than just soaked up power. I started at the back so as not to go to hard to quick and save my juice for pushing threw the slop for 2 ½ hours.
So about 10 minutes into the race when I was just getting into my zone it happened. The almighty flat. Since I am a little old school or outdated this meant I would have to stop and replace my tube. Of course while this was all taking place I watched the whole Cat 1 40-49 and Pro Women ride past.
Once repaired and on my way it was a 2 ½ hour chase. I mostly used the 40-49 class as my carrots trying to hopefully make my way back to my age group. Due to the overwhelming mud conditions I could not determine what age categories the people I was passing were even in. For that matter I even had trouble telling the women pro’s from the men.
All in all I bit the bullet and turned a flat into a good training ride. As far as Table Rock Tours, Verge Sports, and the New York Mountain Bike Race Series this was a good venue. The race was organized great and the trails were well marked. I just need to make sure and give a big shout out to John Powell. John stuck around after both his and his wife’s races were over and helped make sure I was staying hydrated in the feed zone. Withe the mud as bad as it was and dealing with the flat it was John that kept me motivated to finish out the 2 ½ hours of muddy anguish. Thanks John!
