Race Reports
Subaru Cup
Wisconsin Off-Road Series (WORS) #4
Mt. Morris, WI
June 21st, 2009

ImageThe fourth race in the 2009 Wisconsin Off-Road Series billed as the “WORS Mega Event” took place outside of Mt. Morris, WI at Nordic Mountain Ski resort. The Subaru Cup featured a XC race on Saturday with Short Track, Super D, & Downhill on Sunday. You could also choose to race the Omnium, which took you combined results of the XC, Short Track & Super D. I made the trip just for Saturday’s XC race.

It was the first hot race of the season with temps in the mid 80’s and high humidity. Rains from the previous night added to the “steaminess”. This all seemed extremely hot considering only two weeks prior at the Trek Big Ring Classic (WORS #3) it was only 51 degrees for a high temp and muddy. And two weeks prior to the Big Ring Classic at the Crystal Lake Classic (WORS #2) it was barely cracking 60 degrees.

A total of 600 racers showed up for the weekend events and I toed the line with 81 Comp racers. The course was shortened from last year but still up and down (mostly up) the ski hill. The trails were made greasy and soft from the previous days rains and made it feel like you were riding through silly puddy. The single-track had steep, sharp switchbacks that criss-cross the ski runs with a flat section at the bottom of the hill. I was smarter this year and changed up cassettes on my 2x9 setup, 40x29t chain rings with an 11-34t cassette, and I still spent a lot of time in the 29x34t. It all worked great though and I finished a modest 47th place out of 81 Comp riders.
