Sucker Brook Cross Auburn, NH Sept 20, 2009
This race has become the annual “season opener” for a lot of New England folks who love cross. Now that I’m living in Boston, it’s usually my first chance to catch up with my teammates on the Bikeman Cross Team. Big Al was there with the team tent and two very fast-looking new Salsa bikes.
The weather again, was a little too nice - I don’t like to sweat that much when I race cross. Of course, the course was very similar to the last few years - long stretches of bumpy grass, the sand, the wooden steps, a single pair of barriers, and the long, fast, straight stretch in the woods. I messed up. I rode a lap 10 minutes before our start, and when I got back to the start line, I was in the back. Oh well. I won’t do that again.
There was carnage on the first lap. Five guys went down about a minute into it, I managed to veer right and get around it. Big Al, wasn’t so luck. I heard that Ryan Rumsey got the hole shot and led the first lap, but I was too far back to see. Good training for me.
Bikeman had at least 10 racers there: Kurt, Ryan, Al, Me, Zach, Dave, Alexis, Don, Herb, Mike. Next weekend - double header in Vermont - first 2 races of the Verge New England Series.
