This CX race is awesome. Takes place in rural New Jersey on some kind of nursery. Primarily trees I think. Anyhow, the course is pretty well wooded and consequently ‘rooty’ for a CX race. Really it’s a MTB race without any climbing. Race day weather was all OK at around 80F, dry and sunny. Despite the dry weather, there were still a couple of challenging sections of mud. My class, Masters 35+ , went off at 1:00 PM. There were no call ups and I found myself on the line for the start – a first. Just before the gun, the promoter offered up a $25.00 premium for first rider across the first turn of the track (maybe a 75 yd sprint). I took full advantage of my first time at the front of the line-up and won myself $25.00. Then the reality of the year’s first ride on my CX bike set in and at about the half-way mark of the first lap I went from first to about tenth place. A bunch more riders passed before the end of the first lap. At one point I was sitting at about twenty back. Finally started to get it back together after a couple laps and ended up in ninth place out of thirty finishers.
