 SoCal Cross Prestige Series #9 A&B Bakersfield, CA November 7th & 8th, 2009
Southern California Prestige Series of Cyclocross, November 7 and 8th, 2009 in Bakersfield, CA. Another weekend of back-to-back race days. And yet I feel pretty good. For over twenty years I started my work week heading north out of the coastal plain of Los Angeles, driving over two mountain ranges past the inland Valleys now home to millions, up and onto the Ridge Route of Interstate 5. Once past the flat land of Southern California the mountains of the state become the focal point. The ribbon of asphalt, convoy of trucks and the hordes of motorists driving to their destination. Bakersfield is an agricultural town, with a little bit of oil. Hart Park is on the north side of town in a river valley shared by the Kern River. The cross crowd has been racing this portion of Hart Park for 5 years. I was last here two years ago. While the crowd was on the lite side, the action was ready to begin. On Saturday the course followed counterclockwise direction ( grassy down, massive climb, slow technical tree section). Sunday the men and ladies in blue shirts and clipboards pointed in a clockwise direction ( Velcro grassy up, massive downhill, slow technical tree section). It was interesting to converse about the merits of course direction. The single speed warm up worked to perfection. The Masters inspirational. I finished. My Salsa Chili con Crosso looked so good on the roof rack that I could hear the passing spectators comment on the bike.
