ThinkCash Cowtown Cross Race #3 of the Premier Cup Series Fort Worth, Texas November 8th, 2009 Photos by Beth Jones
The Texas Premier Cup Cyclocross series came to North Texas for the ThinkCash Cowtown Cross at Trinity Park in the Fort Worth Cultural District. I raced in this event last year using my Salsa Dos Niner mountain bike. This year I was looking forward to racing on my Salsa Chili Con Crosso for the first time. This race started at 10:00 for me and is only 20 minutes from my house so my wife Beth and I got up early and ate waffles again this week. We then had a relaxing morning around the house while I made a few minor adjustments to the bike and loaded the gear. We arrived at the park shelter house and I registered for the race. I then asked the promoter if they included team names with the results and was told yes they do (even though they have not yet but I am working on it). I then rode around the park warming up. When the course was clear of the Masters race I joined the other Cat 4 racers and took a warm up lap. It was not long before we were staging for the race. We had 34 starters for our Cat 4 /Single Speed start. When the gun went off we started down the park road and up on top of the levy for the first time. Some of the riders in the middle of the pack were caught by surprise at this first climb and came to a complete stop making the rest of us stop too. Just like the crash in the mountain bike race last week this really stretched out the field. I am still not in race shape so I settled in towards the back of the pack and started to race the riders around me. After climbing up and down the levy two more times we rode through the sand pile then back up the side of the levy where the first barricade was strategically placed half way up. I cleared this obstacle and ran the rest of the way up the levy. The rest of the lap was fairly flat and meandered through the trees of the park. This was a 30 minute race so we only had time for 6 laps. I got passed by a few riders and was able to pass a few others myself. I finished a disappointing 25th out of 28 riders in my category. I am training and riding more now so I expect to be finishing better soon. You can check out the results at the Texas Bicycle Racing Associations (TXBRA) race results page. This race was a fund raiser benefiting Paradise Center , A Community Center for Adults with Severe Mental Illness.
