Bikeman's Museum
Ted Wojcik Lugged MTB, Circa 1987
On display in Bikeman's Museum is a Ted Wojcik mountain bike from the late 80's.  The bike is in excellent, unrestored conditon.  With all the cool stuff from back in the day including a Breeze & Angle HiteRite and swank old Magura cantilever brake levers.  A complete Shimano XT bike right down to the pedals.

One of the coolest museum pieces in the collection.  A complete Deore XT 6-speed compent group highlighted by some cool extras.  The Hite-Rite is the most obvious addition, and everyone who was cool had one of those.  How else could you lower your saddle to tackle a gnarly downhill section.  The bike also features a Suntour XC stem, Avocet Touring I saddle, Grab-On (now hard as rocks) grips, and Shimano Dura-Ace hubs laced to Araya RM20 rims.

This is the 1987 Shimano Deore XT group, the first XT group to offer a rear U-Brake.  The U-Brake seemed like a great idea but it tended to catch more mud than any other part of the bike.  This would either deteriorate your braking performance or decrease the lifespan of your rims.  Using a strategically cut milk jug you could build a deflection sheild to try to keep the dirt off the brake but in the end you had to grind through it.

For the most part this was an ultra reliable group with index 6-speed shifting and one of the most sought after cranks ever.  (we still sell a  bunch of these old school XT Cranks) but as times change the technology shown here seems almost prehistoric.  One very cool item is the Magura brake lever set. These levers had a very handy oversize adjuster.  You can see one in the picture below.  It is an off pink colored knob just below the shifter.

A very cool piece of mountain bike history and it still rides great! Get out and ride your old MTB, they are alot of fun!  Check out a race report one of our team riders placed for the Keyesville Classic.  One neat thing they have is the vintage bike race. They race the DH and XC on vintage bikes. There are 2 categories 10-19 year old and 20+ year old bikes. Lots of cool old frames. Cool pictures are included in the article.
