It's tough to bike to work when your not feeling well. This past week I have had a real crappy cold, complete with sore throat, cough, sweats, clogged nose, the works. Monday I just didn't even go to work and the rest of the week I have been driving in. I just can't stand it. I feel like I'm cheating on my bike or something.
I walk past it in the garage and I swear I hear it sigh or lose air out of the tires as it shakes its handlebars in disgust. And I am ashamed, but there is just no way I could've ridden in to work this week. I think this is the first full work week of not riding in over two years. But I guess when your body is telling you to slow down, you better listen. I have had one hell of month, let me tell you. I became a dad (very cool) and a week later started a new job--yikes. So this week my body said no--no to normal living and that included riding in.
So when does one begin riding again? Hard to tell. I think at this point I could muster up enough energy so as not to collapse in the middle of a busy intersection. And I think that's an important question to ask before riding again after an illness. I don't think waiting until you feel 100% is necessary, but feeling well enough to pay attention to road hazards and breath somewhat normally through at least one nostril is (and without the fake high of daytime cold medicines--no heavy equipment--read the label!).
So, with a weekend to rest, I will be back in the saddle next week. There is one thing I didn't miss about commuting in though--the wind! We'll talk a bit about that next week.
