Glocester Grind NECS #1, Glocester, RI
This day would bring two firsts. First mountain bike race of the year and first ride on the new rig. A beautiful Salsa El Santo. Build with only the finest SRAM/RockShox/Avid/TruVativ components. Throw on some Panaracer rubber and this is by far the nicest full suspension I’ve every ridden. This bike is silky smooth.
With a combined Expert Senior 1 and Senior 2 start I wasn’t really sure who to follow from the gun. So I decided to ease up during the mad dash into the woods.
Heading into the woods I found myself on Teammate Ryan Rumsey's wheel. The first lap might have been the toughest; I didn’t get a very good preride. I rode with Ryan for the first two laps and split from him after he started complaining of cramps. I knew from the start this race would be about hydration.
At the start of the third lap Skip Brown, Seven Rider and mountain bike legend, flew by me on the flats. Mind you he is a single speed nut, so that should not happen to someone with gears. Anyways, I jumped on this wheel and got a free “hot lap”. I hung on for about a half a lap. His bike handing skills are so good, he floats over everything.
Starting my last lap I felt really good, I stayed pretty consistent all race. On my final lap I started catching sport riders left and right. Finishing with a time right around 2:13 good enough for 2nd in Expert Senior 1 and 7th overall. I really have to thank my new friend El Santo for not letting me crash all race, another first for me.
