After my DNF at the Hardcore 24 (see race report for all the sorted details) I told myself that I was going to take a break from the bike for 5 to 7 days and let my body and mind try to get back to close to normal.
I made it up 'till the following Thursday evening when I cracked and did some intervals on the trainer for a 1/2 hour just to give my legs a little jolt.
I think the the four straight days of being off the bike had been one of my longest times off the bike in about two years! My mind and body felt refreshed and I was starting to look ahead to my next race- this coming weekend's Mid Atlantic Super Series 6 Hour endurance race.
I knew I was ready to get back when I found myself REALLY looking forward to things like walking up long flights of stairs and mowing grass. I also found myself getting jealous watching my two year old son Brennan riding his bike.
Got some nice road riding in over the weekend doing a 2 hour ride Saturday at tempo and another lower key 2 hours on Sunday focussing on leg strength. Felt great to be on the bike again.
Now a race week is here again and it's time keep and eye on my hours for the week and listen to the bod so I can go into Saturday's race ready to kick some Mid Atlantic booty (or at least not bonk and end up a quivering mess after 2 hours!)
As I've mentioned before on The Chamois I'm horrible at resting. I'm one of those people that feels that If I'm not training, I'm not improving. Of course that is WRONG and you have to give your muscles and mind a rest from training and racing or burn out faster than college kid at a Phish concert.
Rest and trying to eat right is doubly important for someone like myself. I have a full time job, wife, son, and normal life to live too, so It's easy to end up burning the candle at both ends and end up sick or overtrained.
Maybe the Hardcore 24's DNF was a wake up call for me to rest and refocus. I know I'm itching to get out there again, do my best and spread the bikeman.com word. Have a great week and look or a race report next week.
Thanks
Jason
