At mile 20 I briefly hooked up with two guys who encouraged me on... Thanks to Jeff and Peter (I think that was their names) I made it to the top of Mt. Mitchell, highest peak east of the Mississippi - all 6,800+/- feet.
Today was essentially 32 miles 'out' of climbing followed by 32 miles 'back' of descending-a total of 5 hours in the saddle-EPIC!!! The last 4 miles up Mitchell were STRAIGHT UP...5 miles of shear UP...I admit, I was all about the granny gear ; ) and my pb&j at the top (thanks Mary). On the way back I did hit some yucky weather...fog and drizzle, but the descent was incredible....down, down, down...finally hitting the car at 7pm. All and all North Carolina left its mark on me...however, I have to say the same that I left my mark on NC as I conquered Mt. Mitchell...
