Early October I was interested in a MTN bike event close to home. Quite honestly, I was tired of all the Gravel events and wanted to get back on my mountain bike. This event raises money for the Thunderbolt trail runners. THese guys maintain the Thunderbolt skin up/ski down ski trail on Mt Greylock. This is a social circumnavigation ride around Mt Greylock...not a race. However a select few of us quickly turned it into a social race, not official. I had never been to Mount Greylock and found it to be filled with amazing singletrack and empty gravel roads. A mix of gravel and mostly singletrack for thirty four miles. Climbing 4500'. It rained, was wet and slick with few roots and rocks. This was a trust your tires event with dual wheel greasy sliding around turns here and there. The single track flowed very nicely however we did have a 1/2 mile hike a bike section due to the steep, slick and muddy surface. Hanging out by the fire drinking a sponsored microbrew, one of the organizers told me we saw 25% of the singletrack trails. I plan to revisit and ride and ski this area, It was like KT, hilly terrain abounded and single track for miles! They plan on growing this area and I can see how it may one day become a destination for Gravel/MTB riders.
