Attic What IZIT #14

by Bikeman • September 06, 2023

We had a lot of fun with the Attic What IZIT back in the day. We'd dig up some of the more obscure parts hiding here and put it out to our loyal visitors to come up with what it is. Bikeman would always know of course but it was entertaining to see how long it would take for someone else to come up with the correct answer. We would post the answer so the winner could take a victory lap. In the event of multiple correct answers we would post the most complete or creative one. We'll try to dust one of these off each week and keep the excitement going of what will pop up next.

Digging around in the Attic this week we found a neat gizmo from back in the day. To win the coveted prize you will need to come up with the manufacturer, product name, and use. In the event that more than one correct answer is given the most creative answer will win. As always bonus points for any personal experience with the item or setup tips.

Many of you correctly identified this as an "Anti Chain Suck Device" . You are correct, it is an Anti Chain Suck Device, however we where looking for a bit more. Only one person, Wayne Chang, came up with all the required elements and a great description. If you want to see what it takes to win the Attic What IZIT read Wayne's answer.

The Winner is Wayne Chang, Burlingame, CA

"The Fat City Cycles Toothpick Anti-Chainsuck Device was actually 2 of these "L" pieces that bolted onto Fat City frames. the "L" pieces could be maneuvered around so it fits any combination of chainrings and fill up the space that an errant chain could get sucked up into. It was pretty tight looking, but I managed to bend one and get a chain past it because they weren't made that durable. they should have been forged. Anyway Fat City is not around any longer as Tom Chance, the founder, proved that an ingenious mind doesn't necessarily make a good business person, but a lot of his spirit lives on with the IF boys in Somerville. ." ....I think it was Chris Chance that founded Fat City, but a great answer!

Runner Up #1: Bob Unzicker, Arlington Heights, IL

"Manufactured by: Fat City Cycles Product: Anti Chain Suck Plate Use: To prevent chainsuck and protect frame In the days of bad chainsuck, Chris Chance made these adjustable Anti Chain Suck Plates for his mountain bikes. I have an early 90s Yo Eddy with these plates that mount to underside of the drive side chainstay. These have protected my precious old frame from chainsuck damage over many many miles " .... You missed the model name (Toothpick) or we would have had an early winner!

Runner Up #2: H. Montgomery Leesburg,VA

"That is one of the two "toothpick" Chain suck prevention devices for a Fat Chance Mountain Bike." ....All the details are here. With a little more description you could have won the prize!
