Carrabassett 50K - Carrabassett Valley, ME

by John Sumner • October 01, 2018

After a strong winter fat biking training ritual especially, on the coldest of days, I was thinking I would have the foundation to secure a personal best. However, as life goes, things get in the way and training throttled back throughout the Spring.

This race is very well organized and provides plenty of moderate ascents, descents, fast flat duo track, and fast winding single track through the Northern Maine woods. Due to a bridge washing away last year, we had to run through a river, felt good after 28 miles of riding! Overall, I was a little faster than last year and plan to be better next year. Climbing to Stratton Hut, the minor leg cramps began. Other than that, no issues.

For the second year in a row, my Kona HeiHei race light was excellent at this event. My Schwalbe Racing Ralphs provided traction in all conditions and did not flat despite the punishment I subjected them to.

Next year I am going to revisit the 100K race as I have spent considerable time riding the course. It should be easier because this time I will not be going in blind.

I recommend this race because there is something for everybody; kids, 25k, 50k and 100k which is an NUE qualifier!

A Thank You to everyone in the Carrabassett Valley who spent time organizing this great race!.
