Attic What IZIT #6

by Bikeman • July 12, 2023

We had a lot of fun with the Attic What IZIT back in the day. We'd dig up some of the more obscure parts hiding here and put it out to our loyal visitors to come up with what it is. Bikeman would always know of course but it was entertaining to see how long it would take for someone else to come up with the correct answer. We would post the answer so the winner could take a victory lap. In the event of multiple correct answers we would post the most complete or creative one. We'll try to dust one of these off each week and keep the excitement going of what will pop up next.

The most popular edition of the Attic What IZIT to date. This one was destined to trip up more than a few would be winners. What we are looking for is the Manufacturer, Model and use of the product...

This edition provided some interesting guesses. And no it is not a Mountain Tammer or Quad Tammer as most of folks guessed. Once a correct answer was placed there were several others to follow. The correct answer is... A White Industries Limbo Spider. It was used to add an extra small gear to the front of your bike allowing you to virtually climb a wall. While a great concept most people realized that they could walk faster than they could pedal with the Limbo Spider and their popularity faded. The winner was the first person that answered the question correctly. Other correct answers have been posted here as well.

Winner, David Wagenheim

"For the life of me I can't remember who made that thing and I cant find the correct terms to Google it. I can tell you what it is though. That's an add-on for a mountain bike crank to allow you to run a super-low granny gear. If my memory doesn't completely fail me, you could take a cog from a freewheel and attach it as a chainring. Okay, as I was writing this I started to come up with the necessary Google terms. This is definitely NOT an Mountain Tamer Quad since the Quad was a replacement chainring that had splines for a cog. So, it's either the White Industries Limbo Spider, or the Avid Micro Adapter ( or MA II ). And, if my research doesn't fail me, the Avid Micro Adapters just allowed you to run a smaller chainring rather than use a cog. So, I'm going to go with the White Industries Limbo Spider. It used a Suntour type A cog. The cog would slip on to the spider and the black ring would hold the cog to the spider."

Runner Up #1, Todd Miller

"White Industries Limbo Spider. These were used with a Suntour cog so you could run a smaller inner chainring. I actually have one if you're interested in a rider and a show-er."

Runner Up #2, Andre Reyes

"That product is called the limbo spider and was made by a company called Mountain Tamer. It allowed you to use a freewheel cog held on by a circlip for a super granny or even run a 4th chainring in front. I used to run one on my vintage 91 supercaliber as I needed a granny smaller than 24t and Avid had not yet come out with the microadapter."
