Titcomb Mountain Challenge

by Anders Larson • June 19, 2023

Titcomb Mountain Challenge
Farmington, Maine
6/17/23

Titcomb is one of my favorite courses. Lots of machine built climbs and descents, flowing singletrack, and plenty of shade. For the second time in 3 years it poured for most of the race. This did not, however, ruin the day. The trails drain well and there were only a few mud pits and a soggy grass area at the start finish.

The Experts were all staged together in one group. We had a neutral 100 yard start to get around a tight corner and then it was off to the races. I let the really fast guys just go and I settled in with the second group. I am learning that I do better if I keep my effort a little lower than my ego says I can go. This worked out great. I was able to ride strong and smart in the slippery conditions. On the last climb of the last lap I was behind the 2nd place rider in my 50+ age group. I followed him most of the climb, and then with about 5 minutes of climbing left I attacked. I was able to put a good gap on him and hold it to the line.

My Kona Hei Hei CR continues to be a great race bike. Great handling and a super climber. With the wet weather I left my 2.35 Schwalbe Knobby Nics on and they were great. I feel like my gear and food/drink program are really starting to click. I am super psyched for the 50K Carrabassett Challenge next month, just hoping for drier conditions.
