We had a lot of fun with the Attic What IZIT back in the day. We'd dig up some of the more obscure parts hiding here and put it out to our loyal visitors to come up with what it is. Bikeman would always know of course but it was entertaining to see how long it would take for someone else to come up with the correct answer. We would post the answer so the winner could take a victory lap. In the event of multiple correct answers we would post the most complete or creative one. We'll try to dust one of these off each week and keep the excitement going of what will pop up next.

OK we know it is a bottom bracket of some sort, but it is definitely special in a few ways. Give us your best description. We are looking for the make and model as well as how-why the bottom bracket was used. Remember the best answer wins so don't leave anything on the table.

The verdict is in and a winner has been selected. All of the answers were great but Kenneth Yokanovich from Roseville, NM gave the most complete rendition. Here is his answer.

Mavic SSC Bottom Bracket

It requires a special tapered cutting tool to taper the face of the bottom bracket shell. It was unique in that the "lockrings" were used to hold the bottom bracket in place. It offered the ability to adjust chainline. There are no actual cups that thread into the frame which made it compatible with English, Italian, and even French threaded frames! It was also handy in the fact that it can/could be used to retro-fit frames with damaged bottom bracket threads.
